For those who are a more than the casual bass music listener, the likes of Defy Culture may already be a label you're familiar with. For those of you who have not been lucky enough to pump some of the most cutting edge dubstep being made in America right now; I envy you, because you have a litany of tunes that hit every vibe you need to get through the week and they are all located inside one easy to navigate Musical Hub... Defy Culture. Defy Culture is the brainchild of Chief Kaya, King Shotta and Vibe Emissions; this Johnson City, Tennessee based label/collective has really lit up the underground scene for the past year with non stop sound system weapons for DJ’s and producers alike!

Defy Culture has had some monster releases from the Three Headed Beast that is their collective’s vanguard, but have some insane releases from the likes of Mistah, Mikrodot, IDHS, SBK, Ahkur and MAC that are definitely worth a listen. Define Everything For Yourself or D.E.F.Y Culture has clearly shown with the diversity of their releases that with the right amount of talent, hard work and open mindedness you can not only eradicate the idea of pigeon holing artists into little boxes, but you can make people question why the boxes were ever there to begin with. With Defy Culture’s latest release coming from 2 of Sound Boy Entertainment's very own, you can bet that same ingenuity and execution that embodies Defy Culture is all you will be hearing when you give these tunes courtesy of Ellis Delta and Tunic a rinse.

The First tune on the release comes out of Ringwood, NJ and Sound Boy Ent’s own Tunic, entitled “Conquering Sound” this certified badman skanka of a tune comes in light and ambient to start. With the faintest touch of a reggae guitar reverbing in the background that lays the groundwork to a steady melodic build up to a drop that can only be described as offensive. The sinister lead synth punches you immediately in the chest and sets the tone for the rest of this shaker of a track. Tunic adds little nuances, like the drum fills and Dub Siren samples that you hear throughout the tune, that really pull together this tune into a bonafide Sound System Stress Testa. When Tunic isn't producing some of the best dubstep the east coast has to offer he is also the owner and operator of the Hi-Vi Sound System and is also a General Practitioner of various BADMANTINGZ.

The second tune on the release comes “Filthy” straight to us from the Mad Beat Scientists from Brooklyn and Sound Boy Ent’s own Ellis Delta. All you are gonna need for this tune is a loofah and an open mind, don't worry, Ellis Delta definitely supplies the soap on this aptly named track. The track cuts in with an expert chop of one of the catchiest vocal samples I have heard in quite some time that is laid over the remainder of the track to remind you every now and then that this tune is the sonic equivalent of doing hoodrat shit with your friends. The unapologetic hip hop percussion coupled with a nasty synth that clearly brings this tune above and beyond your normal hip hop slappa really showcases Ellis Delta’s ability to simultaneously make a Hip Hop head feel at home while continuing to explore newer sounds to add to his already diverse sonic palette.

Both Ellis Delta and Tunic have shown off their producing chops in very different but equally exciting ways and I am quite gassed to see what other releases these guys have in store for us in the near future. As far as D.E.F.Y. Culture is concerned, you should always have you phasers set to kill with these guys because they do not mess around when it comes to throwing down and scoping out some of the hottest talent the US has to offer.
