Back in January we announced that we would eventually be launching a Bandcamp page, and we’re stoked to say that time has finally arrived. Without further ado, we introduce you to SBE001: an EP in three tracks, one chosen from each SBE resident’s arsenal of unreleased sound system ammunition.
'Galaxy Hoppin', Chawktaw’s offering, is a chorus of cosmic gurgles and chirps. Cooked up from an old extra-terrestrial recipe, there are only a few ingredients involved: expertly swung tambourines and shakers, a pinch of dub influence, evolving sound design, and, of course, a healthy heap of bass weight. That’s all we need, though. The result sets off interstellar chain reactions that thump with an irresistible groove, sure to get the dance moving.

Ellis Delta follows it up with 'Shh Dub', a warehouse-rattling belter. The deceptively calm introduction, featuring a forsaken piano melody, leads to a deeply layered piece of dance floor weaponry. With nods to hip-hop and classic dubstep alike, Ellis Delta brings a forward-thinking attitude to sampling and rhythm structure. A booming, blown-out 808 calls and the response is an assault of crunching bass. A fighter’s bell invites you to step into the ring and glittering synth chops announce victory.
Last but not least, Tunic’s 'Tripped' brings the EP home. This one's dark, dubbed-out, and spicy. Splashes of spring reverb. Skeletal tom fills outlining the rhythm. A voice calls Houston from deep orbit, suggesting (a little too calmly) that something has malfunctioned, before the bass-line hammers out its onslaught. Its relentless triplets have physical presence, growing over time into some sort of non-Newtonian fluid fermented in the TriState underground, seasoned with a healthy distaste for humans.
We know it’s a little self-indulgent, but we’d be lying if we said we weren’t dead proud of this first EP. Don’t take our word for it, though. Go listen, it just dropped July 1st. Oh yea, and did we mention? It’s free.
